>From Theodora Lau, The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes, Harper and Row (1979)

What follows is a list of the first days of each Chinese year, which in this century start as early as January 21, and as late as February 20. If your birthday falls between these dates, you will need to consult this table. For example, 1900 was the year of the Rat; it started on January 30, 1900. If you were born after that date in 1900, your sign is the Rat. You are also born in the Year of the Rat if your birthday is in 1901, up to February 18. Thereafter in 1901, you would be born in the Year of the Ox. However, if your birthday falls after February 20 of a year, the calculation of your sign is easy - you need only find your year of birth as listed above. Similarly if your birthday falls before January 21; then your sign will be that of the previous year. Thus if your birthday is in 1931, after February 21, you know you are born in the Year of the Sheep, as you also know if you are born in 1932, before January 21. But if you were born on January 24, 1931, say, or on February 6, 1932, then you will need to look at the precise dates given for each year below. The date given for each year is the first day of the sign in question. Thus January 31, 1900 is the first day in the Year of the Rat,
